UNIST Has 'Top 1%' Researchers ... Second Most Nationwide After Seoul National University

Clarivate Selected as 2021 HCR Seven

Seven professors from Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) were selected as 2021 World Top 1% Researchers by Clarivate.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) presented plaques to the top 1% researchers worldwide selected by Clarivate on the 12th.

The "Highly Cited Researcher (HCR)" is an annual selection by Clarivate, an information analytics company, which announces the top 1% researchers in each field based on the number of citations of their papers.

At the plaque presentation ceremony held at the university headquarters, six out of seven UNIST professors selected as HCRs in 2021 attended.

Clarivate officials including Yoonhee Kang, Executive Director of Consulting, and Jiyoung Sung, Executive Director of Marketing, along with UNIST President Yonghoon Lee and Director of External Cooperation Myungin Lee, congratulated the awardees.

The seven faculty members are Professor Kwangsoo Kim of the Department of Chemistry, Professor Rodney S. Ruoff of the Department of Chemistry, Professor Jongbeom Baek of the Department of Energy Chemical Engineering, Professor Sangil Seok of the Department of Energy Chemical Engineering, Professor Hyunwook Lee of the Department of Energy Chemical Engineering, Professor Seungwoo Cho of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and Professor Jaepil Cho of the Department of Energy Chemical Engineering.

There are a total of 55 HCRs affiliated with Korean universities and research institutes, and 6,602 worldwide. With this selection, UNIST became the university with the second highest number of HCR professors in Korea in 2021, following Seoul National University with 11.

President Yonghoon Lee said, "I express my gratitude to the faculty who widely promote UNIST's name with world-class research capabilities," and added, "We will continue to provide an environment where top researchers can freely conduct their research."
