'Massive Customer Data Leak' Former Vice President of Yanolja Fined in First Trial

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] Former vice president of the leisure platform Yogi Otta, where personal information of nearly one million people was leaked externally, has been sentenced to a fine.

On the 12th, Judge Lee Yoo-young of the Seoul Eastern District Court Criminal Division 3 sentenced former Vice President Jang and Yogi Otta Company to fines of 20 million won each for violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection.

Former Vice President Jang and Yogi Otta Company were prosecuted for negligence in management after hackers stole personal information of about 910,000 accommodation bookers in March 2017 and failed to implement protective measures, resulting in the leakage of personal information of an additional 70,000 customers.

It was found that when former Vice President Jang launched the Yogi Otta Marketing Center homepage in 2016, he did not have the webpage server inspected, leaving vulnerabilities to server attacks, but took no particular measures.

The judge stated, "Former Vice President Jang did not take measures to control unauthorized access to the service administrator page where users' personal information could be downloaded."

Furthermore, "Although intrusion was detected by the intrusion prevention system of Yogi Otta, no personnel were assigned to monitor and analyze it, so the breach was not noticed," and added, "There is recognition of intentional failure to fulfill personal information protection duties and foreseeability of the consequences."

The judge also noted, "The leaked information is highly likely to be used for other crimes and is sensitive information with a large scale of leakage," but added, "Considering that fines and penalties were imposed by the Korea Communications Commission and efforts were made to prevent damage."
