MagnaChip Semiconductor (“MagnaChip”) (CEO Youngjoon Kim, NYSE: MX) announced on the 10th that it is developing automotive OLED DDIC products for in-vehicle displays and plans to strengthen its OLED DDIC product lineup and expand the global OLED market.
With the recent increase in the use of electric vehicles, autonomous driving, and connected cars, automotive semiconductors essential for advanced in-vehicle infotainment systems and safe driving are gaining attention. MagnaChip is developing automotive OLED DDIC using a 40nm process, which is planned to be used in Center Stack Displays and Instrument Cluster Displays, and is expected to be supplied to premium European automakers in the first half of 2023.
This automotive OLED DDIC supports various resolutions up to FHD and supports flexible automotive OLED panels such as rigid and flexible panels. Additionally, it is developed as an all-in-one solution integrating source driver, gate driver, and timing controller into a single chip, which can increase the manufacturing cost competitiveness of display panels by reducing the number of components.
According to market research firm Omdia, the automotive display market is expected to grow from $8.2 billion in 2021 to $9.7 billion in 2025. In particular, the use of OLED panels supporting clear image quality, high visibility, and fast response speed is on the rise, and global sales of automotive OLED panels are projected to grow from $117 million in 2021 to $524 million in 2025.
