[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Sumi] A petition has been posted claiming that despite her husband losing his sight and job after cataract surgery, the hospital is avoiding responsibility.

A, a resident of Miryang, Gyeongnam, posted a message titled "My husband lost his job after going blind following cataract surgery" on the Blue House National Petition Board on the 3rd.

According to A, her husband underwent a pre-examination and surgery at an ophthalmology clinic in Miryang on September 14 last year after being told that "cataract surgery is a simple procedure."

The morning after the surgery, A's husband visited the clinic to have the waterproof pad removed. The doctor personally removed the pad and prescribed additional eye drops, citing inflammation.

A explained, "My husband trusted the doctor's words and came home to apply the eye drops."

She continued, "The next day, when he woke up, his pupil had become cloudy. Sensing something was wrong, we went to the ophthalmology clinic, and only then were we told it was an emergency and to go to a university hospital." However, A's husband ultimately went blind.

A said the doctor told them, "Even if something goes wrong, I have insurance under the ophthalmology name with 200 million won in compensation." She added, "We endured for three months trusting that statement, but now they are denying any fault and acting as if it’s none of their concern," expressing her anger.

She lamented, "My husband mainly drove for product deliveries, but now he cannot work, and our livelihood is bleak."

She also said, "The doctor told us to sue if we can through the law and to hire a lawyer and try to win. Overnight, the head of the household lost his job, and it’s hard to even pay off our apartment loan, so hiring a lawyer who can win a medical dispute feels hopeless," she appealed.
