Sunchon National University Decides to Freeze Tuition Fees This Year

Frozen for 14 Years, Decided at an Average of About 3.95 Million KRW per Year

[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon National University (President Ko Young-jin) announced on the 7th that it held a tuition review committee meeting the day before and decided to freeze undergraduate and graduate tuition fees this year as well, following last year.

This marks the 14th consecutive year of tuition freeze decisions.

Accordingly, this year’s undergraduate tuition fees at Suncheon National University are 1,653,000 KRW per semester for humanities and social sciences, 1,998,000 KRW for natural sciences, and 2,163,000 KRW for engineering.

Compared to the national average annual undergraduate tuition fee of 4,115,000 KRW at national universities (excluding special-purpose universities) based on last year’s disclosed information, Suncheon National University’s average tuition fee is 3,948,000 KRW, which is lower than the overall average of national universities (excluding special-purpose universities).

Suncheon National University has frozen or reduced tuition fees for 14 years since the 2009 academic year.

From the 2012 academic year to the 2015 academic year, tuition fees were consecutively reduced for four years, and notably, from the 2018 academic year, the admission fee for new undergraduate students was abolished.

President Ko Young-jin stated, “Despite many difficulties in university operations due to tuition freezes and declining enrollment rates caused by a decrease in the school-age population, we froze tuition fees to minimize the financial burden on students and parents amid the COVID-19 situation. Even under the ongoing threat of COVID-19 until last year, we achieved various accomplishments such as being selected as a general financial support university. Despite challenging financial conditions, we will actively fulfill our responsibilities as a national university through cost reductions in routine expenses, improvements in the educational environment via government financial support projects, strengthening student capabilities, and regional win-win cooperation activities.”
