"TV OLED Panel Shipments Expected to Exceed 10 Million Units This Year"

[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] It is forecasted that the shipment volume of OLED TV panels will exceed 10 million units for the first time ever this year. With LG Electronics further strengthening its OLED TV lineup and the high possibility of Samsung Electronics re-entering the OLED TV market, the market for TV OLED panels is also expected to grow rapidly.

On the 6th, display market research firm DSCC revealed this in its "Top 10 Display Industry Outlooks for 2022." DSCC stated, "OLED TVs have been positioned as flagship products of LG Electronics and Sony to successfully compete with Samsung Electronics in the premium segment," adding, "As LG Display steadily increases production and Samsung Display joins in, OLED TVs will account for 4% of the overall TV market."

"TV OLED Panel Shipments Expected to Exceed 10 Million Units This Year"

LG Display produces 99% of the world's supply of OLED panels for TVs. LG Display first shipped TV OLED panels in 2013, surpassed cumulative sales of 10 million units in early 2019, and set a record of 20 million cumulative sales at the end of last year, just two years later. The time required to sell 10 million OLED panels has shortened from six years to two years. This year, LG Display has set a goal to release next-generation products in advance and ship 10 million units within one year.

Additionally, Samsung Display developed Quantum Dot (QD) OLED panels and entered mass production at the end of last year, thus entering the TV OLED panel market.

DSCC noted, "Due to difficulties in securing initial production volume from the supply side, QD OLED panel production will not reach 1 million units," but added that when combined with LG Display's panel supply, the total will exceed 10 million units. Samsung Electronics' QD OLED panels are expected to be supplied to Samsung Electronics and Sony this year.

Besides this, DSCC forecasts that this year will see a decline in LCD TV panel prices, delays or cancellations in production volume expansion, turmoil in the display industry due to US-China trade conflicts, and the launch of Apple's augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) headsets equipped with three displays.
