[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Yoo Eun-hye announced in her New Year's address on the 2nd that normal school attendance will be promoted starting in March, with a focus on restoring daily school life.


Deputy Prime Minister Yoo stated, "This year, we will concentrate on educational recovery to restore daily school life and overcome students' learning deficits," adding, "We will do our best to ensure that normal school attendance takes place in the new semester in March and that all educational activities at schools are fully restored."


She explained, "We will strengthen school quarantine measures and actively explain and seek cooperation from students and parents to create a safer school learning environment through vaccination of children and adolescents."


Regarding concerns about side effects from adolescent vaccinations, she said, "The government will take responsibility for severe adverse reactions to adolescent vaccinations and prepare more meticulous support measures," adding, "We will communicate more closely with the education field during policy implementation, listen to opinions, and enhance policy acceptance."


Deputy Prime Minister Yoo also stated that she will lay the foundation for future education policies to advance Korea as an education-leading country.


She said, "In the rapidly changing environment due to COVID-19, we aim not only to be recognized as a country with excellent international academic achievement levels but also to become an education-leading country that innovatively transforms education to support individual student growth and choices, as well as future society represented by the 4th Industrial Revolution."


Regarding policies to establish the foundation for the future education system in 2022, Deputy Prime Minister Yoo said, "We will steadily promote the development of detailed content for the 2022 revised curriculum, meticulous preparations for the establishment of the high school credit system by 2025, changes in the school education environment through the Green Smart Future School initiative, and the transition of education governance centered on the establishment of the National Education Commission."


She added, "Universities will be respected to innovate autonomously based on their own innovation plans, and higher education finances will be additionally expanded and supported," explaining, "Through projects such as the 'Inter-Ministerial Collaborative Talent Cultivation' starting this year, we will effectively support talent cultivation projects in new industries across various ministries and respond more swiftly to talent cultivation in new industry fields such as future cars, bio, and system semiconductors."
