Annual Average Temperature 15.7℃, Mild Climate and Abundant Sunshine Suitable for Subtropical Crop Cultivation
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Gwangyang City, Jeollanam-do, is beginning the full-scale harvest of the subtropical citrus fruit "Redhyang," which it has been cultivating in response to climate change.
Since 2013, the city has been fostering subtropical fruits, and the cultivation area has grown to 2.77 hectares across 13 farms. Among them, 8 farms covering 1.74 hectares cultivate citrus fruits such as Hallabong, Cheonhyehyang, and Redhyang.
Starting with Redhyang from farms in Bonggang-myeon, which are harvested in December, Hallabong can be enjoyed in mid-January, followed by Cheonhyehyang in February.
Gwangyang City benefits from a mild climate with an average annual temperature of 15.7℃ and abundant sunlight, providing favorable conditions for subtropical crop cultivation. Compared to other regions, the fruits have a deeper and richer aroma, with balanced sweetness and acidity, resulting in excellent taste.
Park Jong-su, head of the Future Agriculture Team, stated, “We plan to gradually increase the cultivation of subtropical fruits in Gwangyang City in response to climate change. Next year, through a pilot project to improve the growing environment of facility-grown fruits using thermal efficiency technology, we aim to help subtropical fruit farmers reduce heating costs.”
