Next-Generation Marine Mobility Technology Featuring Autonomous Navigation Unveiled
President Jeong Gi-seon and Key Executives Visit CES Venue
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoonju Hwang] Hyundai Heavy Industries Group will participate in the world’s largest electronics exhibition, ‘CES 2022,’ held in Las Vegas, USA, from January 5 to 8 next year. This is the first time Hyundai Heavy Industries Group will operate an exhibition booth at CES.
Through this exhibition, Hyundai Heavy Industries Group plans to showcase the future of the marine mobility sector centered on autonomous navigation technology. In the industrial machinery sector, one of the group’s core businesses, they will present advanced products integrated with artificial intelligence and robotics technology. In the energy sector, they will introduce a future vision based on proprietary eco-friendly technologies.
The exhibition booth will be broadly composed of ▲ Avikus’s autonomous navigation ▲ robotization of industry and daily life ▲ marine hydrogen value chain. Avikus, named after the Viking origin word ‘AVVIKER,’ is a specialized company for autonomous navigation and navigation system development established by Hyundai Heavy Industries Group in December last year. In June, it succeeded in fully autonomous navigation of a small vessel in the Pohang canal for the first time in Korea.
Avikus will install a model of a fully autonomous leisure boat about 6 meters in size and use LED lighting to create the appearance of actual ocean navigation. Visitors can experience a navigation simulation game applying virtual reality technology inside the leisure boat.
A Hyundai Heavy Industries Group official said, “Autonomous navigation technology not only lowers the barrier to marine leisure but also innovates logistics and can change the face of marine development such as resource surveys, pollutant removal, and marine ecosystem surveys,” adding, “Early next year, we plan to undertake the world’s first ocean crossing of a large commercial vessel.”
Hyundai Doosan Infracore and Hyundai Construction Equipment will showcase industrial machinery robots and remote control technologies that can safely and efficiently perform all construction processes from surveying to work planning and construction. In particular, through an interactive game building an eco-friendly marine city, they plan to easily explain ‘robotization of industry’ to visitors.
The marine hydrogen value chain will also be realized. Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, Hyundai Heavy Industries, Hyundai Oilbank, and Hyundai Electric have proprietary business structures and technological capabilities to produce and store green hydrogen, a future eco-friendly energy source, offshore, then transport it to land for sale as vehicle fuel or conversion to electricity.
A group official stated, “Key group executives such as Jung Ki-sun, President of Hyundai Heavy Industries Holdings, Cho Seok, President of Hyundai Electric, and Cho Young-cheol, President of Hyundai Doosan Infracore, are scheduled to visit the site,” adding, “We plan to actively explore technology trends by touring global companies’ exhibition booths and pursue business cooperation with leading companies.”
