Provincial Assembly Member Jeon Gyeong-seon Urges "Additional Extension of Employment Crisis Areas in Mokpo and Yeongam"

Provincial Assembly Member Jeon Gyeong-seon Urges "Additional Extension of Employment Crisis Areas in Mokpo and Yeongam" Jeon Gyeong-seon, Jeonnam Provincial Assembly Member

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jun-kyung] The Jeonnam Provincial Council has strongly urged the government to extend the designation of 'Employment Crisis Areas.'

On the 9th, the Jeonnam Provincial Council adopted the 'Resolution to Urge the Additional Extension of Employment Crisis Areas in Mokpo and Yeongam Districts' at the 358th 2nd regular session and recommended the government to extend the designation of 'Employment Crisis Areas.'

Jeon Gyeong-seon, Chairperson of the Operations Committee of the Jeonnam Provincial Council (Democratic Party of Korea, Mokpo 5), who spearheaded this resolution, explained, "The economic situation in Mokpo and Yeongam, designated as employment crisis areas, remains unstable, and issues such as employment problems and population decline are in a serious crisis." He added, "Despite the tearful efforts of local governments and the regional shipbuilding industry in line with government support, these efforts were dashed by the unexpected challenge of COVID-19."

He continued, "Recently, domestic shipbuilding orders have been recovering, centered on large shipbuilders, but there is a time lag of at least 1 to 2 years before this translates into substantial employment effects." He argued, "Continuous support is necessary to provide a foundation for Mokpo and Yeongam regions to overcome job issues and economic recession."

He further stated, "Next year is a critical period for employment recovery in Mokpo and Yeongam areas, and if the government does not extend the designation of employment crisis areas and cuts support, the local economy will fall into an even deeper quagmire." He urged, "The government must extend the designation of employment crisis areas and prepare additional support measures for the shipbuilding industry so that the recovery of shipbuilding orders leads to substantial employment effects and the regional economy can revive."
