[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jun-kyung] The basic ordinance on the development of islands in Jeonnam Province, which was proposed by Na Gwang-guk, a member of the Jeonnam Provincial Assembly (Democratic Party, Muan 2), passed the 3rd plenary session of the 358th regular meeting on the 9th.
This ordinance was enacted for the first time nationwide to establish a basic framework for sustainable island development policies and island development policies reflecting the characteristics of island regions.
The ordinance sets development directions tailored to the conditions of individual islands and seeks environmentally friendly and sustainable development directions with active participation led by island residents.
It also mandates the establishment and implementation of a comprehensive island development plan for Jeonnam Province every 10 years to improve the quality of life of island residents.
In Jeonnam Province, to establish the comprehensive island development plan, a basic survey on island population changes and island routes must be conducted annually, and a status survey on the resources possessed by the islands must be conducted every five years and reflected in the comprehensive island development plan.
Assemblyman Na Gwang-guk stated, “Jeonnam is a treasure trove of islands, with 2,165 islands accounting for 65% of the 3,343 islands in South Korea. As Jeonnam has the most islands nationwide, it is necessary to establish a systematic and sustainable basic framework for island policies.”
He added, “Islands are a new growth engine for South Korea in terms of culture, tourism, environment, and marine and ecological resources. We will continue to actively work on preparing island development policies that can enhance the future of islands and the quality of life of island residents.”
