[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] The “Ordinance on Support for Public Interest Litigation Costs in Nam-gu” proposed by Nam-gu Council member Oh Young-soon passed the Planning and General Affairs Committee of the 281st Nam-gu Council (2nd regular session) on the 9th.
Councilor Oh stated the reason for the enactment: “We aim to establish an institutional basis to support litigation costs and other expenses to protect and remedy the rights of district residents regarding various legal issues arising from public interest protection.”
According to the ordinance, support for public interest litigation costs will be provided up to a maximum of 10 million KRW per judicial instance.
The support is limited to residents of Nam-gu, Gwangju City, and the support funds can be provided within the budget after review by the support committee upon submission of the public interest litigation cost support application form.
The support committee will be composed of lawyers with litigation experience or individuals recommended by civic organizations, and confidentiality obligations are stipulated to ensure that personal information of committee members and related personnel is not disclosed externally.
The ordinance proposed on this day is scheduled to be deliberated and enacted through resolution at the 3rd plenary session on the 17th.
