[Asia Economy Reporter Junyi Park] The government will provide compensation of 90 million KRW per person to the victims of the Jeju 4·3 Incident starting next year.
The National Assembly held a plenary session on the 9th and passed the "Special Act on the Investigation of the Jeju 4·3 Incident and the Restoration of the Honor of the Victims" amendment containing this provision. The amendment was approved with 169 votes in favor and 8 abstentions out of 177 members present.
The amendment includes provisions to equally pay 90 million KRW in compensation per deceased or missing victim. The victim compensation will be paid gradually over five years starting next year.
However, during the review process by the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, a special provision recognizing marriage and biological child relationships reported after the victim's death or disappearance was deleted. This measure reflects the court's opinion that recognizing such relationships without verification could cause confusion.
Earlier, the Administrative and Security Committee's bill subcommittee merged and approved the amendment to the 4.3 Special Act, which was proposed by Oh Young-hoon of the Democratic Party and Lee Myung-soo of the People Power Party, on the 29th of last month.
