[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Choi Jong-geon, the First Vice Foreign Minister, pointed out that "the athletes must feel very lonely" regarding the United States' boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics. Emphasizing the 'relay Olympics' connecting Pyeongchang, Tokyo, and Beijing, he also stated, "We will act as the immediate past host country."

On the morning of the 9th, Vice Minister Choi appeared on TBS's 'Kim Eo-jun's News Factory' and said, "We are not making any decisions regarding the Beijing Olympics," before making these remarks.

Earlier, following the United States, security alliance AUKUS countries such as the United Kingdom and Australia, as well as 'Five Eyes' countries including Canada and New Zealand, announced their participation in a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics. Japan is also reportedly considering joining. A diplomatic boycott means sending athletes but not government delegations.

Regarding this, Vice Minister Choi said, "The athletes must feel very lonely," and added, "We intend to fulfill our role as the immediate past host country."

When asked if there was pressure to join the boycott, he replied, "I mainly learn about the boycott through newspapers," and said that the U.S. side has not exerted pressure. Vice Minister Choi stated, "The White House has clearly expressed that it is a decision each country must make based on its own circumstances," and added, "The Northeast Asia relay Winter Olympics connecting Pyeongchang, Tokyo, and Beijing is very meaningful."
