[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Seohyun] A story has emerged about a mother who became a vegetative state after receiving the first dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.

On the 8th, a petition titled "My mother is in a vegetative state after receiving the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine" was posted on the Blue House National Petition Board.

The petitioner stated that after her mother received the Pfizer vaccine, she showed symptoms of flu-like illness and complained of chest pain, so she immediately visited two nearby hospitals, but the hospitals only prescribed cold medicine.

Afterwards, the petitioner's mother experienced unexplained respiratory distress and cardiac arrest, and she remains unconscious in the intensive care unit. The hospital's medical opinion stated, "Epilepsy and anoxic brain injury have been observed."

The petitioner said, "Now she has to leave the ICU." This is due to a shortage of hospital beds caused by the surge in COVID-19 cases and hospital regulations. He added, "We are trying to transfer her to a nursing hospital," and lamented, "The general ward in the current hospital costs millions of won for treatment, so there is no other option."

He continued, "My mother was vaccinated for me and our loved ones, but the price she pays is struggling between life and death surrounded by cold machines and tubes."

He also stated, "I am not opposing the government's quarantine policy. If the vaccine can end COVID-19 as soon as possible, I have no complaints. However, the government needs to take responsible action regarding adverse reactions and side effects after vaccination."

Additionally, the petitioner said, "They only tell us to submit documents for compensation, but they do not listen to the victims' families," and revealed that the currently operating adverse reaction response agencies are of no help.

He emphasized, "No one can deny that the vaccine's safety is not 100% confirmed," and added, "As the President said, overcoming vaccine anxiety comes from the state taking responsibility for side effects."

He appealed, "Every time a new variant emerges, how much anxiety must we endure to receive a new vaccine?" and "What is truly frightening is losing a beloved family member and that no one tells us how to cope in such situations."

He concluded, "While the vaccination rate is important, the government’s attention and consideration for those suffering side effects are urgently needed. I hope the victims' families receive treatment that they will not regret even a little."
