[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jun-yi] The government’s bill to provide compensation of 90 million won per victim of the Jeju 4·3 Incident starting next year has passed the National Assembly’s Legislation and Judiciary Committee.

On the 8th, the Legislation and Judiciary Committee held a plenary session and approved the "Amendment to the Special Act on the Investigation of the Jeju 4·3 Incident and the Restoration of the Honor of the Victims," which includes this provision.

The amendment stipulates equal compensation of 90 million won per victim.

However, during the committee’s review, a special provision recognizing marriage and biological child relationships reported after the victim’s death or disappearance was deleted. This measure reflects the court’s opinion that recognizing such relationships without verification could cause confusion.

The amendment is expected to be submitted to the plenary session on the 9th. If passed, compensation payments to victims will be gradually made over five years starting next year.
