National University Professor Arrested and Indicted for Taking Large Sums from Parents Under the Pretext of Admission

[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] A national university professor who extorted large sums of money from parents under the pretext of their children's admission has been brought to trial in custody.

The Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office's Corporate and Labor Crime Division (Chief Prosecutor Choi Hyung-won) announced on the 8th that Mr. A was indicted in custody on charges of bribery and fraud under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes.

Mr. A, who was a professor in a sports-related department at a national university, is accused of receiving a request from parent Mr. B around September 2013 to help his child gain admission and passing 40 million won to an acquaintance. It was also investigated that he directly received 10 million won from another parent the following year as a bribe for admission favors.

Between December 2017 and June 2018, Mr. A also embezzled 15.66 million won in two installments by falsely claiming airfare expenses for training camps and overseas competitions from the university. It was confirmed that the actual expenses were borne by the parents.

The prosecution secured evidence after raiding Mr. A's university office and residence last October and arrested him last month.
