Expectations for Improved Pedestrian Safety in Nighttime and Severe Weather Traffic Safety Vulnerable Areas

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Seon-gap) has expanded the installation of ‘pedestrian guide lights’ throughout all sections of signal-free crosswalks within school zones to enhance safety.
Pedestrian guide lights are LED road markers installed along both sides of crosswalks on the ground. At night, they emit light from the ground, allowing drivers to recognize crosswalks and pedestrians from a distance and slow down their vehicles accordingly.
Additionally, the lights turn on when the illuminance falls below a certain level (100 lux), helping to prevent accidents even in adverse weather conditions such as fine dust or fog.
Last year, the district installed pedestrian guide lights at 39 crosswalks within school zones and at 4 locations outside the zones with heavy student foot traffic, improving the walking environment for children and receiving positive feedback from residents.
Building on this, the district secured additional funding through the ‘Seoul City School Route Walking Environment Improvement Autonomous District Project’ contest this year and expanded the installation of guide lights to all signal-free crosswalks within school zones that lack traffic signals and are vulnerable to child safety accidents, beyond the previously installed sections.
This year, 253 crosswalks within school zones in the district, including those near Yangjin Elementary School, Jangan Elementary School, Gyeongbok Elementary School, Jayang Elementary School, and Dongja Elementary School, were equipped with the guide lights.
Kim Seon-gap, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, stated, “Through the installation of these pedestrian guide lights, we expect not only safer walking for children and residents but also improvements in the driving environment for motorists. We will continue to eliminate safety blind spots by introducing various advanced traffic safety facilities.”
