Co-Chair Companies Include Hyundai Motor and 7 Others
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 8th the launch of the 'Autonomous Driving D.N.A Technology Forum' to serve as a public-private cooperation channel and to accelerate the early commercialization of fully autonomous driving in preparation for the future car era.
The inaugural general meeting of the Autonomous Driving D.N.A Technology Forum was held on the same day at Dragon City in Seoul, hosted by Choi Jeong-dan, chairman of the founding preparation committee. About 50 stakeholders attended, including Park Yoon-kyu, Director General of the Ministry of Science and ICT, Cho Seung-rae, member of the Democratic Party of Korea, Kim Young-sam, President of the Korea Electronics Technology Institute, and representatives from Hyundai Motor Company.
Currently, over 60 member companies participate in the D.N.A Forum, including Kakao Mobility, KT, LG Uplus, Edison Motors, and Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, with eight joint chair companies such as Hyundai Motor Company.
Lee Yoon-geun, Director of the Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, was elected as the representative of the joint chair group on the day. The chairpersons of the Steering Committee and four specialized committees?Artificial Intelligence Software, Data, Vehicle Communication Security, and Technology Verification?were also appointed.
This forum serves as a platform for mutual cooperation between over 60 participating institutions and demand organizations in the five major technology fields of the Pan-Ministerial Autonomous Driving Technology Development Innovation Project Group, which was launched in April. A memorandum of understanding was signed to establish a foundation for the commercialization of fully autonomous driving by 2027, linked with new ICT convergence technologies such as data, 5G, and AI.
The Ministry of Science and ICT stated, "To overcome the limitations of sensor-based autonomous driving, we will advance communication technologies (V2X) between vehicles and between vehicles and road infrastructure, and focus on developing autonomous driving learning datasets, core artificial intelligence software technologies, equipment, and terminals to enable the creation of various mobility services."
It added, "We will also enhance the existing cellular-based vehicle-to-everything communication (C-V2X) technology and lead the localization of next-generation vehicle communication technology (5G-V2X) to support ultra-high-speed, ultra-low-latency, and highly reliable fully autonomous driving, thereby strengthening the technological competitiveness of domestic autonomous driving companies."
