President Moon to Invite Chey Tae-won and Kim Ki-nam to Seek Solutions for 'Carbon Neutrality' (Comprehensive) [Image source=Yonhap News]

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] President Moon Jae-in will hold a meeting with Choi Tae-won, Chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Kim Ki-nam, Chairman of Samsung Electronics, Gong Young-woon, President of Hyundai Motor Company, Jung Seung-il, President of Korea Electric Power Corporation, and others to seek solutions for the transition to carbon neutrality.


On the 10th, to mark the first anniversary of the declaration of the '2050 Korea Carbon Neutrality Vision,' the Blue House announced on the 8th that President Moon will host the 'Strategic Briefing for Leading Carbon Neutral Companies' by inviting representatives from economic organizations, industrial and energy sector companies, and small and medium-sized enterprises to the Blue House.


This event was organized to invite companies that have played a leading role in carbon neutrality to the Blue House so that the President can personally express his gratitude and demonstrate the government's full support.


The strategic briefing will be attended by five economic organizations including the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as well as companies from various industrial sectors such as steel, petrochemicals, refining, automobiles, semiconductors, and energy.


From economic organizations, attendees include Choi Tae-won, Chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Koo Ja-yeol, Chairman of the Korea International Trade Association; Kim Ki-moon, Chairman of the Korea Federation of Small and Medium Business; Sohn Kyung-shik, Chairman of the Korea Employers Federation; and Kang Ho-gap, Chairman of the Korea Federation of Medium-sized Enterprises.


From the industrial sector, attendees include Kim Ki-nam, Chairman of Samsung Electronics’ Advanced Institute of Technology; Jung Ho-young, President of LG Display; Jeon Young-hyun, Vice Chairman of Samsung SDI; Ga Sam-hyun, Vice Chairman of Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering; Ahn Dong-il, President of Hyundai Steel; and Gong Young-woon, President of Hyundai Motor Company. From the energy sector, attendees include Jung Seung-il, President of Korea Electric Power Corporation; Kim Eung-sik, President of GS EPS; Jung Yeon-in, President of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction; Lee Gu-young, President of Hanwha Solutions; Cho Hyun-sang, Vice Chairman of Hyosung; and Cho Kyung-mok, President of SK Energy.


From medium-sized enterprises, attendees include Lee Dong-chae, Chairman of EcoPro; Lee Sang-won, CEO of Sanga Front Tech; and Kim Hae-ryun, Chairman of Taekyung Group. From small enterprises, attendees include Shin Yong-moon, Vice Chairman of Shilla Engineering; Lee Sang-hoon, CEO of Uryong; and Kim Gu-han, CEO of Gridwiz.



At the event, Choi Tae-won, Chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry and co-chair of the Public-Private Joint Committee for Carbon Neutral Industrial Transition, will deliver a response speech on behalf of the invited business leaders. Following this, the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy will report on the 'Vision and Strategy for the Great Industrial and Energy Carbon Neutral Transition,' and thematic discussions will continue.


The Blue House emphasized, "As the world moves toward carbon neutrality, carbon neutrality is becoming a core norm in international trade and corporate management," and added, "Our companies are already moving swiftly."


It further stated, "President Moon has repeatedly declared that the government will not place the burden solely on companies but will spare no policy and financial support," and explained the purpose of the event, saying, "This event will be an opportunity to listen to the difficulties of companies and for companies and the government to jointly seek solutions."
