Eradicating Voice Phishing Crimes... Ministry of Justice Considers Expanding Response Organization

[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] The Ministry of Justice has decided to strengthen cooperation with related agencies, including expanding the scale of response organizations, to actively respond to the increasing voice phishing crimes each year.

On the 7th, the Ministry of Justice announced that since the scale of voice phishing damage exceeded 700 billion won last year and the methods of crime are evolving, it will promote comprehensive measures to respond to this.

So far, the Ministry of Justice, together with the prosecution, has made efforts to respond to the antisocial crime of voice phishing by designating dedicated prosecutors for each prosecution office, criminalizing voice phishing organized crime groups, and strengthening sentencing for voice phishing crimes. In particular, in July, the Supreme Prosecutors' Office established a 'Voice Phishing Response TF' under the Anti-Corruption and Serious Crimes Division to establish measures to eradicate the crime and strengthen cooperation with related agencies such as the police and financial authorities.

However, as voice phishing crimes are becoming systematized with domestic and overseas organizations linked, related agencies have decided to establish an organic cooperation system to respond. Comprehensive measures will also be prepared, including pre-education and prevention, investigation and victim relief, and communication and financial countermeasures.

A Ministry of Justice official stated, "To eradicate voice phishing crimes, we plan to respond promptly at each stage from prevention, investigation, punishment, to victim relief," and added, "We will review plans to expand response organizations to cover communication and financial countermeasures, education and publicity, as well as international cooperation and collaboration."
