[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] A woman in her 40s who gave birth via emergency cesarean section while suffering from respiratory distress due to COVID-19 infection was discharged in good health after three weeks.
According to Yonhap News on the 6th, a pregnant woman A (41), who was 28 weeks pregnant, began experiencing a cough with phlegm on the 11th of last month. She underwent a COVID-19 test at a screening clinic and was waiting for the results at home when her symptoms worsened. On the early morning of the 14th, A was brought to the Hanyang University Hospital Regional Emergency Medical Center in a fainted state and was immediately moved to a negative pressure isolation room.
The medical staff determined that the cesarean section could not be delayed to save the fetus’s life as the mother showed signs of acute respiratory distress syndrome. They promptly performed an emergency cesarean section. Upon arrival, the mother was in a critical condition requiring intubation, and the fetus was also in an urgent state.
The cesarean section performed on the 15th of last month involved various specialists from obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, anesthesiology and pain medicine, and emergency medicine, successfully delivering a premature baby at 28 weeks.
The baby, a boy weighing 1.48 kg, tested negative for COVID-19. Although there are no major health issues, the baby is currently in the neonatal intensive care unit due to prematurity. The mother, A, who has recovered her health, was discharged that day.
The hospital stated that while there are many successful cases of cesarean sections performed on COVID-19 positive mothers both domestically and internationally, successful surgeries on mothers infected between 14 and 28 weeks of pregnancy are extremely rare.
