[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] A group that brokered employment for illegal Thai immigrants and collected fees has been referred to the prosecution.
The Immigration Special Investigation Unit of the Seoul Immigration Office announced on the 6th that on the 25th of last month, Thai nationals A and B were sent to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office without detention on charges of violating the Immigration Control Act.
According to the investigation unit, A advertised illegal employment by posting photos of stacks of money and luxury bags on social networking services (SNS), and B introduced domestic jobs to illegal Thai immigrants who approached after seeing the advertisements.
They brokered employment for a total of 15 people and received fees of 300,000 to 400,000 KRW per person, according to the investigation.
This investigation began after the Thai government provided SNS advertising account information to our Ministry of Justice in February. Since signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Thai Ministry of Labor in 2019 to prevent illegal stay and employment of Thai nationals, the Ministry of Justice has been receiving information on illegal entry and employment of Thai nationals.
This is the first time since the MOU was signed that it has led to actual detection of criminal activities.
