[Gochang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jae-gil] Jeonbuk Gochang-gun (Governor Yu Gi-sang) announced on the 6th at 11 a.m. that it signed the "Gochang Offshore Wind Power Civil-Government-Public Regional Win-Win Agreement," marking the smooth launch of the Jeonbuk Southwest Offshore Wind Power, at the Migeumkwaecheong Cultural Space in Gangseondal Area, Sangha-myeon.
The agreement ceremony was attended by representatives of the Gochang fishing village cooperatives and fishermen, Shin Won-sik, Jeonbuk Province Deputy Governor for Political Affairs, Lee Jong-yeon, Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock Economy Bureau of Gochang-gun, Choi In-gyu, Chairman of Gochang County Council, Kim Hoe-cheon, President of Korea South-East Power, and Oh Hee-jong, CEO of Dongchon Wind Power.
Originally, the Gochang offshore wind power project had been delayed due to conflicts between the project operator Dongchon Wind Power and the fishing village cooperatives and fishermen.
However, through active mediation by Gochang-gun and Jeonbuk Province, they agreed to promote a project where residents participate through communication and harmony, allowing offshore wind power and fisheries to coexist, leading to the signing of this agreement.
Through this win-win agreement, the county is leading the domestic offshore wind power industry by promoting another offshore wind power project following the "Southwest Offshore Wind Power," making it a model case of offshore wind power coexisting with the local community, serving as an example for other regions.
Deputy Governor Shin Won-sik and Chairman Choi In-gyu, who attended the agreement, expressed their gratitude to the fishing village cooperatives and fishermen representatives and wished for the success of the offshore wind power as a win-win project for regional development with unified efforts from civil, government, and public sectors.
Kim Hoe-cheon, President of Korea South-East Power, which operates the project, said, "With experience in promoting Jeju Tamna Offshore Wind Power, the first offshore wind power in Korea, we will develop Gochang Offshore Wind Power into a renewable energy power plant that coexists with local residents," adding, "In the future, we will work together with Gochang-gun's regional development as the number one tourist attraction in the Southwest region linked with Noeul Bridge."
Meanwhile, "Gochang Offshore Wind Power" is planned to be constructed starting February 2023 and completed by July 2024, with an approximately 70 MW facility scale located 2 to 3 km offshore from the coast of Sangha-myeon, Gochang-gun.
Through this, it is expected to supply carbon-free clean energy to the county, contributing to the realization of "2050 Carbon Neutrality," and play a significant role in making Gochang-gun, a home of prehistoric world cultural heritage, a mecca of next-generation clean energy industry.
