[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] Suspected cases of infection with Omicron, a new variant of COVID-19, have consecutively emerged at universities in Seoul.
According to Seoul City on the 5th, the three confirmed cases in Seoul classified as suspected Omicron infections were all foreign students enrolled at universities in Seoul. Two are students at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, and one is a student at Seoul National University.
They were identified as having visited a church in Michuhol-gu, Incheon, attended by the pastor couple who were the first confirmed Omicron cases in Korea last weekend. They have not yet been confirmed positive, and the test results are expected to be released on the morning of the 6th.
Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Seoul Campus informed the student council that a COVID-19 positive case, Mr. A, was infected with the Omicron variant as of midnight that day. However, it is reported that it has not been definitively confirmed whether Mr. A is infected with Omicron. A Dongdaemun-gu official said, "It is true that the COVID-19 test result was positive," adding, "Since the positive result came after visiting the church, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency requested a separate Omicron test, but it has not yet been confirmed whether it is an Omicron infection."
Mr. A, an international student, visited the church in Michuhol-gu last weekend and was confirmed to have been at the school library and other locations for three days from the 29th of last month to the 1st of this month. Based on Mr. A's movements, the health authorities advised 139 students who were on the same floor of the library and 30 students who attended face-to-face classes together to undergo polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing.
