Blue House Rejects Calls to Ease Capital Gains Tax for Multiple Homeowners: "Issue for Next Government to Consider"

[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] The Blue House stated on the 2nd that the reduction of capital gains tax for multi-homeowners, which the Democratic Party of Korea is considering, is "an issue to be reviewed by the next government."

Park Soo-hyun, Chief of Public Communication, appeared on KBS YouTube channel's 'D-Live' and explained, "(The claim) is not a statement at the level of the Democratic Party's official stance, but just a briefly mentioned personal opinion."

Earlier, Park Wan-joo, Chairman of the Democratic Party's Policy Committee, said regarding the recent issue of reducing capital gains tax for multi-homeowners, "We are considering it without excluding it." In response, Hong Nam-ki, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, rebutted on the same day, saying, "There has been no discussion within the government and no plan to promote it."

In this situation where discord between the party and the government has been exposed, the Blue House has effectively sided with the Ministry of Economy and Finance once again.

Chief Park explained, "If we monitor the real estate market now, the rate of increase in housing prices is slowing down, and in some areas such as Sejong City, prices are declining." He added, "In such a situation, easing capital gains tax for multi-homeowners could affect the market."

This is interpreted to mean that unnecessary variables should not be introduced into the market at a time when prices are showing signs of stabilizing downward.

Chief Park said, "The Ministry of Economy and Finance also expressed concerns about the Democratic Party's idea (of reducing capital gains tax). (The Ministry) has coordinated opinions with the Democratic Party as well," adding, "This issue has been settled."

When the host asked, "Does this mean, as the Ministry of Economy and Finance says, that there will be no reduction of capital gains tax for multi-homeowners during this government?" he answered, "Yes."
