[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] In a residential area of Sasang-gu, Busan, more than 20 stray cats were found dead after being brutally abused one after another, prompting animal organizations to demand an investigation.
On the 2nd, the Sasang Police Station in Busan is conducting an investigation following a report from the Busan Stray Cat Protection Coalition regarding the serial killing of stray cats.
Earlier, the Busan Animal Love Stray Cat Protection Coalition announced that on the previous day (the 1st), more than 20 cats were found dead after being abused over a three-month period since August in a residential area of Sasang-gu, Busan, and reported the case to the police.
Among the cats found, some had skin peeled off in a square shape on their backs, and others had fractured skulls.
A representative of the organization stated, "The police autopsy concluded that one cat died from a fractured skull," adding, "The nature of the wounds differs from those caused by roadkill or collisions, so it is highly likely that a sharp weapon was used."
The organization suspects that this case is related to an incident in January near the same residential area, where a dismembered cat’s body disappeared and was found charred a month later. Although the perpetrator was not caught at that time, the case became widely known, and no cat abuse cases occurred in the area for a while. The organization speculates that the same offender may have resumed their activities.
A representative said, "After the January incident became known, things were quiet for a while, but the crimes seem to have resumed since August," adding, "Cats abused are being repeatedly found near a specific house."
They further added, "If someone is capable of such cruelty toward defenseless cats, it is unsettling to think what they might do to people."
