A Total of 3 People Infected with the 'Omicron' Variant
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] The first case of infection with the new COVID-19 variant, the 'Omicron variant,' has been confirmed in South Korea.
According to the quarantine authorities on the 1st, whole genome sequencing results to confirm the variant showed that a total of three people? a couple in their 40s who were classified as suspected Omicron variant cases the day before, and a male acquaintance in his 40s?were finally confirmed to be infected with the Omicron variant.
The couple visited Nigeria from the 14th to the 23rd of last month, returned on the 24th, and were diagnosed with COVID-19 on the 25th. Subsequently, one acquaintance and one teenage child living with them were additionally confirmed positive. Test results for the other child are expected to be released within this week.
The infected individuals were found to have respiratory symptoms and muscle pain, but no other notable symptoms.
Meanwhile, the Omicron variant is known to be more contagious than other variants and there is a possibility that it could evade existing COVID-19 vaccines.
