Integration of Intelligent Technologies Using Semiconductor Light Sources Based on Photonic Fusion into Autonomous Vehicles

[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] The Korea Automotive Technology Institute is partnering with the Korea Photonics Technology Institute to jointly conduct research and development (R&D) on photonic convergence technologies for future mobility.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Korea Automotive Technology Institute, and the Korea Photonics Technology Institute announced on the 1st that they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen cooperation on automotive technologies based on photonic convergence at the Korea Photonics Technology Institute in Buk-gu, Gwangju.
About 20 government and research institution officials attended the signing ceremony, including Jaeyoung Park, Director of Manufacturing Industry Policy at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy; Namyong Heo, President of the Korea Automotive Technology Institute; and Yongjin Shin, President of the Korea Photonics Technology Institute.
The Korea Automotive Technology Institute explained that the purpose of this MOU is to apply intelligent technologies using semiconductor light sources based on photonic convergence to autonomous vehicles, thereby establishing a mutually beneficial development foundation for future mobility and the photonic convergence industry and revitalizing the ecosystem.
Through this MOU, the Korea Automotive Technology Institute and the Korea Photonics Technology Institute plan to promote ▲ fostering the automotive industry and joint projects ▲ mutual use of facilities and equipment infrastructure ▲ exchange of research and technical personnel ▲ hosting education and seminars for core personnel training and technology dissemination.
Following the signing ceremony, the two institutions shared key technology development statuses at a technology exchange meeting, including ▲ trends in mobility convergence lighting technology (Korea Photonics Technology Institute) ▲ trends in mini and micro LED display technology (Korea Automotive Technology Institute) ▲ photonic convergence technologies for autonomous driving and urban air mobility (UAM) (Korea Photonics Technology Institute) ▲ current status of autonomous driving data technology development (Korea Automotive Technology Institute).
In his remarks at the signing ceremony, President Namyong Heo said, "To secure competitiveness in photonic convergence technology in the global autonomous vehicle market, technology development and infrastructure establishment must be carried out quickly and efficiently," adding, "We plan to actively support practical and mutually beneficial cooperation to strengthen the competitiveness of the automotive industry based on photonic convergence."
