[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Seohyun] An incident occurred in which a woman in her 90s suffering from dementia was sexually assaulted by a man who entered her house. Despite clear witness testimony and DNA evidence, the police dismissed the suspect with a 'no charges' decision and closed the investigation.

According to a YTN report on the 1st, in March, Ms. A, a woman in her 90s living in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, was sexually assaulted by Mr. B, a man in his 80s living in the same neighborhood.

Ms. A usually kept her front door open like a living room to welcome neighbors. Mr. B entered the main room through the open door and committed the crime.

Mr. B fled after the crime but was caught shortly after. He strongly denied the charges, claiming he did not commit the crime, but the National Forensic Service's analysis found Mr. B's saliva on Ms. A's underwear.

The granddaughter, who was in another room at the time of the incident, witnessed the crime directly and immediately reported it to the police. Ms. A's eldest son told YTN, "My niece was crying and said, 'Uncle, something terrible happened,' and told me about the incident," adding, "When I asked, 'Where is that man?' she said he was running away and that she was chasing him, so I told her to call 112 and follow him."

Since the end of last year, Mr. B repeatedly trespassed into Ms. A's house while her second son and granddaughter, who live with her, were away. In January, he was caught by the eldest son, who came to care for his grandmother, while attempting to molest and assault her inside the house and was driven out.

Ms. A's eldest son said, "He went upstairs and was choking her neck or doing something, and there was a struggle and commotion downstairs," adding, "I thought, 'How can this happen?' and pulled him out, which shocked him."

Despite these circumstances and evidence, the police concluded four months after starting the investigation in July that there was no charge against the male perpetrator and closed the case. The reason given was that the victim grandmother suffers from dementia, her testimony was unclear, and there was insufficient evidence.

However, the victim's family raised objections, and after the prosecution reviewed the case, they requested the police to conduct a supplementary investigation. The Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency, which took over the case, also applied charges of trespassing against Mr. B.
