“Disney+ Surpasses 1 Million Weekly Users, Enters Top 5 in Korea”

[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Disney+, the global online video streaming service (OTT) launched in the domestic market on the 12th of last month, has secured 1 million weekly users, establishing itself as one of the top 5 services in Korea, according to a recent survey.

According to an analysis by market research firm Nielsen Media Korea on the usage status of major OTTs on the Android operating system (OS) from the 15th to the 21st of last month, Disney+ recorded 1.01 million weekly users, ranking 5th domestically. During this period, the average usage time per Disney+ user was 57 minutes, the average number of usage days was 2.3 days, and the average number of launches was 7.3 times.

Nielsen Media Korea stated, "Disney+ entered the top 5 with 1.01 million weekly users immediately after its launch," and evaluated that "it secured a large number of loyal users in a short period in the fiercely competitive OTT market."

During this period, Netflix ranked first with 4.71 million users, followed by Wavve (1.88 million), TVING (1.65 million), and Coupang Play (1.10 million).

Among Disney+ users during this period, 58% were primary users who used Disney+ the most among the top 5 OTTs. Additionally, 38% of Disney+ users used only Disney+ exclusively among the top 5 OTTs during this period.

Disney+ officially launched its service in Korea on the 12th of last month, offering various original content including Marvel's "WandaVision" and "Loki" series. It also introduced subscription plans in partnership with major telecom companies such as KT and LG Uplus to attract customers.

However, amid controversies over some mistranslations in subtitles and inconvenient user environments during the early service period, a Mobile Index survey showed that the daily number of users dropped sharply from about 593,000 on the launch day, the 12th of last month, to about 419,000 on the 19th, one week later.
