'Corporate Citizenship Becomes Culture'... 2021 Corporate Citizenship POSCO Culture Day Held

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seonsik] POSCO held the ‘2021 Corporate Citizen POSCO Culture Day’ on the 30th.

The Corporate Citizen POSCO Culture Day is an event that summarizes the achievements of practicing the corporate citizen management philosophy over the year and shares the direction to move forward, marking its third year this year.

This year’s event, themed ‘Corporate Citizen, Becoming Culture,’ was organized as a festival to reflect on the value of corporate citizenship, which has become part of POSCO’s culture by sharing and encouraging excellent cases of POSCO Group employees practicing corporate citizenship in their work and daily lives.

The event was held simultaneously online and offline, consisting of a book concert, presentations of outstanding corporate citizen practice cases, and special lectures. Notably, over 400 MZ generation employees participated in the event through the metaverse, a virtual world, from Seoul, Pohang, Gwangyang, and Songdo, exchanging various opinions in real time.

On this day, POSCO unveiled , a follow-up practical book to last year’s conceptual book on the corporate citizen management philosophy, .

This book features contributions from 14 scholars in business administration and humanities and social sciences, including Professor Emeritus Kwak Su-geun of Seoul National University, Professor Yoo Gyu-chang of Hanyang University, Chair Professor Song Ho-geun of POSTECH, and Professor Emeritus Moon Hyung-gu of Korea University. It highlights POSCO’s corporate citizen management philosophy and practical cases divided into four parts: ▲Transformation of business models ▲Innovation of industrial ecosystems ▲Creation of social impact ▲Changes in organizational culture.

Jung Un-chan, chairman of the Win-Win Growth Research Institute, who wrote the recommendation, stated, “I first encountered the corporate citizen management philosophy when I visited POSCO in 2019. The achievements POSCO has made over the past two years based on this philosophy have sufficient value to lead social change.”

Following this, the ‘GEM Connecting Story’ presentation contest was held in an audition format where group employees directly presented outstanding corporate citizen practice cases. ‘GEM Connecting Story’ signifies connecting (connect) the corporate citizen management philosophy (Go the Extra Mile) that takes one step further for stakeholders with employees’ practice cases (story). Five cases selected through a preliminary audition over the past two months since September competed fiercely in the finals held that day.

The five cases included: ▲‘Smart Safety Ball,’ which can detect the presence of harmful gases in confined spaces in advance ▲A plan to recycle discarded oyster shells in the steelmaking process ▲‘Export Logistics Consolidation Platform’ that helps ship small cargo from customers together with POSCO’s volume ▲Development of ‘Green STS,’ which increased the scrap usage rate in electric furnaces (POSCO Jangganghang Refractory) to 90% and expanded sales through international certification ▲Strengthening the autonomous safety system using 3D visualization safety content. All five cases received high evaluations with no clear winner, and all five teams were awarded the highest prize.

Meanwhile, Yoo Young-sook, director of the Climate Change Center and an outside director of POSCO, emphasized in a special lecture, “ESG management is a global trend. POSCO, which declared the corporate citizen management philosophy in 2018, is leading ESG management 2 to 3 years ahead of other companies,” and added, “I hope POSCO will take the lead in achieving Korea’s 2050 carbon neutrality through the commercialization of carbon-free hydrogen reduction steelmaking.”
