[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] The prosecution has sent Eun Sumi, mayor of Seongnam City, Gyeonggi Province, who is accused in the 'investigation data leak case,' to trial.
On the 30th, the Criminal Division 6 of Suwon District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Kim Byeongmun) indicted Mayor Eun without detention on charges including bribery offering and acceptance, abuse of authority to obstruct the exercise of rights, and violation of the Anti-Graft Act.
Mayor Eun is accused of conspiring with policy advisor Mr. B in October 2018 to receive investigation data related to her violation of the Political Funds Act in exchange for fulfilling improper requests from the responsible police officer.
Previously, the prosecution indicted former police officer Mr. A on charges of intervening in Seongnam City's interests in exchange for showing investigation result reports to Mr. B, and also indicted Mr. B for fulfilling Mr. A's improper requests.
Mayor Eun is also accused of fulfilling personnel requests for police officer Mr. C, who was Mr. A's superior. In addition, she was indicted for receiving approximately 4.67 million KRW in cash and wine from Mr. B under the pretexts of vacation expenses and holiday gifts from October 2018 to December 2019.
After receiving Mr. A's detention transfer from the police in March, the prosecution uncovered additional charges against Mr. B, Mr. C, other city officials, company representatives, and brokers, indicting a total of eight people (six detained, two not detained). With the indictment of Mayor Eun, the highest-ranking figure in the case, the related investigation has been concluded.
A prosecution official stated, "This case involves corruption where police officers and city officials privatized the public positions and authority entrusted to them by the people and used them for personal gain."
