[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] A memorial concert honoring Police Superintendent An Byeong-ha, who protected the lives of Gwangju citizens against the Chun Doo-hwan military regime as the head of the Jeonnam Provincial Police during the May 18, 1980 Democratization Movement, will be held in Gwangju.
The An Byeong-ha Memorial Association (President Park Gisu) announced on the 30th that it will hold the "Democratic Police Superintendent An Byeong-ha Memorial Concert" on December 2 at 6 p.m. at the Large Performance Hall on the 2nd floor of the Seo-gu Culture Center.
The memorial concert will be held in two parts. Part 1 will include An Byeong-ha’s life and philosophy, greetings, congratulatory speeches, and a plaque presentation ceremony, followed by Part 2, which will feature the memorial concert.
In Part 2, the concert will feature the Gwangju Women’s Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra (Director Kim Yujeong), Big Men Singers (baritone Kim Jeseon, bass Jang Munseok), and a mixed duet (Kim Ikhyun & Shim Ji).
The An Byeong-ha Memorial Association originated from the "Small Citizens Group Loving An Byeong-ha" in 2018, followed by the "Citizen Committee for the Publication of An Byeong-ha’s Biography" in 2019, and was reborn as the "An Byeong-ha Memorial Association" in 2020. It has been actively operating since around the publication of An Byeong-ha’s biography on May 12 last year.
On October 9, a memorial ceremony for the 33rd anniversary of Police Superintendent An Byeong-ha’s passing was held in Gwangju for the first time in 33 years in front of the former Jeollanam-do Provincial Police Headquarters, commemorating the May 1980 Jeonnam Provincial Police Chief An Byeong-ha.
Meanwhile, the event is expected to be attended by Kim Yongin, President of the Korea Veterans Police Association, the Chief of Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency, and the Chief of Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency.
An official from the An Byeong-ha Memorial Association said, “Due to COVID-19 quarantine guidelines, entry will be limited to about 150 seats out of 340 seats in the Large Performance Hall of the Seo-gu Culture Center, and admission will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Those who have not received the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine will not be allowed to enter.”
