[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Hyundai Doosan Infracore, a construction equipment subsidiary of Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, declared carbon neutrality at its business sites on the 30th, marking the first such declaration in the domestic construction equipment industry.
Hyundai Doosan Infracore has established a mid-to-long-term plan for carbon neutrality across all its global production corporations by 2050. Based on the science-based greenhouse gas reduction target (SBTi) 1.5-degree scenario, the company plans to reduce emissions by 42% by 2030 compared to 2020 levels, 71% by 2040, and ultimately achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
To this end, the company intends to review and implement process improvements and the introduction of renewable energy (including joining RE100) at domestic sites such as Incheon and Gunsan, as well as all global business locations. In particular, by switching to 100% renewable energy by 2040, it aims to reduce current emissions by up to 80%, with the remaining portion offset through the purchase of carbon credits to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Hyundai Doosan Infracore has already enrolled all company vehicles in Korea’s zero-emission vehicle transition project (K-EV100) and is operating accordingly.
In addition to carbon neutrality at business sites, the company plans to reduce carbon emissions during the product usage phase. To this end, starting with the launch of electric excavators in 2023, it will continuously expand its eco-friendly product portfolio, including electric batteries and hydrogen fuel cells.
A Hyundai Doosan Infracore official stated, "The production plant for articulated dump trucks (ADT) in Norway has already switched all its power to 100% renewable energy," adding, "We believe that achieving green business transformation will determine the future value of the company, and we will do our best to achieve this goal."
