[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] A secretary to Lee Jae-hwan, chairman of Jaesanhollings of the CJ family, has been booked by the police on charges of purchasing the narcotic 'Cannabidiol Oil.'
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Narcotics Crime Investigation Unit announced on the 29th that it booked A, a close aide to Chairman Lee, on charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act and summoned him for investigation last month.
A police official stated, "The purchase of narcotics has been confirmed, and the first investigation of (Chairman Lee's secretary) has been conducted," adding, "Chairman Lee has not been booked and is not a subject of investigation before booking (internal inquiry). We are currently verifying how (Chairman Lee) is involved and the specific charges."
It is known that during the investigation, A testified that he purchased Cannabidiol (CBD) oil through an internet site under Chairman Lee's instructions. The credit card used to buy the oil is also owned by Chairman Lee. CBD oil is known to contain cannabis components and is classified as a narcotic under the current Narcotics Control Act. Import, export, sale, and brokerage of such substances are prohibited domestically.
The police confirmed that they identified A's criminal charges during the investigation after receiving a request from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in July to investigate internet sites handling narcotics.
