Demands for Strengthening Surveillance Systems in Each Country
[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the new variant of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), called 'Omicron,' poses a very significant risk worldwide.
According to AFP and other news agencies, on the 29th, WHO stated, "If a large-scale spread of COVID-19 occurs due to Omicron, the consequences could be severe."
WHO described Omicron as "a very different variant with a large number of mutations," explaining that "some of these mutations are concerning and may be associated with immune evasion potential and higher transmissibility."
They also expressed concern that "there is a high likelihood that Omicron will spread further globally."
While noting that "no deaths associated with the Omicron variant have been reported so far," WHO pointed out that "if Omicron is more contagious than previous variants, a surge in cases and pressure on healthcare systems could lead to an increase in deaths."
Furthermore, WHO has called on countries to strengthen surveillance systems to clearly understand where and how quickly Omicron is spreading, and urged acceleration of COVID-19 vaccinations, especially among vulnerable groups.
However, as Omicron has been detected in various countries, WHO opposed travel restrictions targeting Africa. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa, criticized such restrictions as "an attack on global solidarity."
