[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Lee Yoon-hye, daughter-in-law of former President Jeon Du-hwan, will have her lawsuit opposing the public auction of the detached annex at former President Jeon’s Yeonhui-dong residence ruled by the Supreme Court.
On the 29th, Lee’s side filed an appeal against the Seoul High Court Administrative Division 3’s (Presiding Judges Lee Sang-joo, Kwon Soon-yeol, and Pyo Hyun-duk) ruling dismissing the plaintiff’s claim.
Previously, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office put the former president’s Yeonhui-dong residence up for public auction in 2018 after he failed to pay the confirmed forfeiture amount of 220.5 billion won in 1997 on charges including rebellion and bribery.
Through the Korea Asset Management Corporation (KAMCO)’s auction agency, the residence was sold in March 2019 for 5.137 billion won.
The Yeonhui-dong residence of former President Jeon was divided into three parts: the main building under the name of his wife Lee Soon-ja, the garden under the secretary’s name, and the detached annex under the daughter-in-law’s name, which became a point of contention.
The Jeon family filed objections regarding the execution of the criminal trial with the court and launched multiple administrative lawsuits based on this division.
Daughter-in-law Lee filed lawsuits against the prosecution’s seizure and KAMCO’s auction disposition, but lost in both the first and second trials.
Meanwhile, unlike the detached annex, the main building and garden were deemed difficult to classify as illegal assets, leading to the cancellation of their seizure by the Seoul High Court, a decision confirmed by the Supreme Court in April this year. The case Lee appealed on this day concerns the lawsuit over the auction disposition of the detached annex.
