Heo Seok, Mayor of Suncheon, Pledges to Make Byeollyang Yongduhang the No.1 Fishing Village Tourism Spot at Byeolbam Talk

[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Heo Seok) announced on the 29th that on the 26th, they visited Yongdu Village in Byeollyang-myeon to hold a Byeolbam Talk session to discuss local issues such as the Fishing Village New Deal project.

Yongdu Village, home to 135 households and 263 residents, is a representative fishing village located in Suncheon Bay, where frank discussions took place regarding residents' long-standing project requests and local development plans.

A member of the fishing cooperative who participated in the Byeolbam Talk suggested that there is a lack of tourism content utilizing Yongdu Village’s clean mudflats, and proposed the establishment of a mudflat experience center and education to enhance the capacity of joint projects among the village’s many elderly residents.

In response, Mayor Heo Seok stated that Yongdu Village has applied for the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ Fishing Village New Deal 300 project, with the final results to be announced early next month. He outlined plans to ensure that if selected, the project would include harbor maintenance, the construction of the Garimat Mudflat Five Senses Center, the creation of Garimat Road, and the operation of mudflat ecological experience programs run directly by residents to generate income and create jobs.

He also emphasized that the success of the Fishing Village New Deal project depends on residents gathering diverse community opinions, discovering independent projects, and demonstrating autonomous capabilities, urging related departments to actively prepare support measures.

Meanwhile, the head of Yongdu Village and development committee members proposed ▲ installation of vehicle blocking facilities and exercise equipment at the Dangsan Tree resting area, ▲ renovation of the aging bus stop and repainting of parking lines at the village hall, ▲ reinforcement of the drainage ditch at the village entrance followed by the creation of a small park, and ▲ cadastral re-survey of Yongdu Village.

Mayor Heo Seok promised to promptly proceed with the installation of vehicle entry prevention facilities and exercise equipment around the Dangsan Tree, repair of the bus stop, and repainting of parking lines to ensure convenience and safety for residents. He also requested related departments to review support plans such as maintenance around the drainage ditch at the village entrance and tree planting.

However, regarding the cadastral re-survey, he explained that since the area is designated as a cadastral discrepancy zone, if more than two-thirds of landowners submit consent forms, the project schedule can be prioritized.

In his closing remarks, Mayor Heo Seok said, “I will do my best to reflect the diverse voices from the field that emerged during the Byeolbam Talk with Yongdu Village residents in city administration,” and added, “As a leading city in resident autonomy and direct democracy, Suncheon will strive to hold more frequent sessions to share opinions with residents on village issues and development and to find solutions together.”
