The Symbol of the Cold War and Division 'Camp Greaves'... Cultural Exhibitions and Performances to Resume Next Month Ammunition Depot at 'Camp Greaves' [Gyeonggi-do]

[Asia Economy Reporter La Youngcheol] The 'Camp Greaves Ammunition Depot Project,' which transforms 'Camp Greaves,' a symbol of the Cold War and division, into a space of culture and peace, is resuming after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gyeonggi Province announced on the 30th that, in line with the 'gradual recovery of daily life,' the 'Camp Greaves Ammunition Depot Project,' where visitors can enjoy media art and installation art, will operate starting December 1.

The 'Ammunition Depot Project' is a 'cultural regeneration project' that utilizes the spatial uniqueness of Camp Greaves to embody the meaning and value of the DMZ, initiated in August 2018 as part of the 'DMZ Peace Platform.'

Through the 'Media Art Project,' artist Lee Seung-geun's 'Do Not Cross This Line,' which uses the technique of 'projection mapping'?a method that merges virtual images with reality to create optical illusions?will be unveiled.

Visitors follow lines on the floor, moving from the dark history of division toward a world filled with bright peace and hopeful energy, allowing them to internalize the values of the DMZ and peace. This is a distinctive feature of the project.

In particular, the entire 154.98㎡ ammunition depot space is filled with video, sound, and scent to maximize immersion.

In the 'Installation Art Project,' Kim Myung-beom's installation artwork 'ONE,' which was first revealed domestically during the DMZ Peace Platform and received enthusiastic responses and empathy from visitors, will be showcased again.

This work, which breathes new life by extending and connecting dead tree branches to the antlers of a taxidermied deer up to the ceiling of the ammunition depot, has transformed a place that bore the scars of division and was neglected for years into a creative space depicting peace and hope.

Additionally, Kim Myung-beom's video work 'Horizontal Space,' operated as a permanent exhibition program at Gallery Greaves, is also considered a highlight.

Meanwhile, 'Camp Greaves' is a U.S. military return site where the U.S. Army's 2nd Division, 506th Regiment was stationed for over 50 years from 1953 until their withdrawal in August 2004.

Since 2013, the province has preserved the original architecture of 'Camp Greaves,' transforming it into the only historical, cultural, and artistic experience facility within the Civilian Control Line, establishing it as a representative cultural and artistic tourist attraction of the DMZ.

Shin Jun-young, Director of the Peace Cooperation Bureau, stated, "We will continue to do our best to make Camp Greaves a definitive DMZ landmark through various exhibitions, performances, and cultural and artistic programs."
