A Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering official is experiencing ship spray work in a virtual space. [Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering announced on the 29th that it has opened a VR Coating Training Center where ship spray coating training can be received based on immersive virtual reality (VR). Spray training is possible in a virtual space that replicates the shape without actually boarding the ship block.
The coating occupation is generally considered the most time-consuming job to train skilled workers at shipyards. It requires an apprenticeship-style teaching and learning process and has many constraints such as cost and environment. This VR training program applies artificial intelligence learning algorithms based on spray injection test data, not merely producing visual effects but realistically replicating the actual spray shape.
A company official said, "It will be possible to simultaneously solve the problems of coating film quality issues and increased production costs due to higher material usage in the ship coating field," adding, "About 80 coating workers will participate in the training starting this December, and its utilization will increase in the future."
Previously, the company introduced VR technology for seafarer education and safety experience. In April, it opened a digital production center to check production status and the condition of trial-operated ships for the first time in the industry, explaining that it is transforming into an advanced shipyard.
