[New Release] Welfare City People Around the Plutonium Factory

Kate Brown 'Plutopia - A Global History of Nuclear Disaster'

[New Release] Welfare City People Around the Plutonium Factory

During the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union built a welfare city near the plutonium production plants called "Plutopia," an almost utopian community. Residents of Plutopia were provided with abundance but had to give up their health and autonomy. The author meticulously examines how the leaders of both the US and the USSR minimized the costs of producing nuclear warheads, how they responded to criticism, and how they quelled the discontent of the nuclear family workers. This work has won six prestigious awards in the field of world history, including the Ellis W. Hawley Prize, the Albert J. Beveridge Award, and the George Perkins Marsh Prize.
