[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] As the spread of COVID-19 intensifies, new confirmed cases continued to surge across the country even on the holiday, the 28th.

According to the quarantine authorities, Seoul city, and other local governments, the number of new COVID-19 cases nationwide was recorded at 1,677 from midnight to 6 p.m. on that day. This total excludes Busan among the 17 metropolitan cities and provinces.

This is 719 fewer than the 2,396 cases recorded at the same time the previous day, and 94 more than the 1,583 cases recorded at the same time a week earlier (the 21st).

By region, the metropolitan area accounted for 1,140 cases, and non-metropolitan areas accounted for 537 cases. By city and province, the numbers were: Seoul 536, Gyeonggi 392, Incheon 212, Daegu 87, Gyeongnam 83, Gyeongbuk 68, Gwangju 53, Chungnam 50, Jeju 47, Gangwon 44, Jeonbuk and Chungbuk 29 each, Daejeon 22, Jeonnam 21, and Sejong 4.

Since there is still time before the tally closes, the number of new confirmed cases announced at midnight on the 29th is expected to increase further.
