Chung-Ahm High School Selected as Seoul's First Publicly Operated Private School

[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Chung-Ang High School has been selected as the first public-type private school operated in Seoul.

On the 28th, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education announced that after evaluating the applicant schools following the project announcement in October, Chung-Ang High School was finally selected as a public-type private school. It will be operated as a public-type private school for four years starting in December.

A public-type private school is an innovative private school model that enhances publicness in the decision-making process of private schools and provides administrative and financial support at the level of national and public schools.

Public-type private schools have a public-type board of directors composed of more than one-third but less than one-half of the total directors, and one auditor recommended by the Office of Education. They receive correction and guidance through annual performance evaluations, and additional support is determined through a mid-term evaluation after two years.

They will carry out public-type private school promotion tasks for the next four years and receive an annual support of 300 million KRW (250 million KRW for environmental improvement and 50 million KRW for special projects), totaling 1.2 billion KRW over four years.

The Chung-Ang Academy Foundation and Chung-Ang High School plan to strengthen the publicness of the school foundation's operation and ensure financial transparency and accountability by ▲ establishing a future-oriented curriculum foundation ▲ realizing educational autonomy through participation and communication ▲ establishing a school culture that respects student rights ▲ innovating school culture based on integrity and democracy.

The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education stated that it will support public-type private schools with administrative and financial backing to enhance project outcomes and expand the model to other private schools.

Cho Hee-yeon, Superintendent of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, said, "I express my gratitude to the Chung-Ang Academy community, which has taken the first step toward becoming a public-type private school, and the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education will actively cooperate and support to ensure that the attempt to establish a public operation model of private schools that meets public demand can succeed."
