[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] Alvin Chau (Chinese name Zhou Chaohua), the founder of Sun City and known as the "Gambling King" of Macau, was arrested by Macau police on charges including arranging "offshore gambling," Xinhua News Agency reported on the 27th.
Macau police, a special administrative region of China, summoned Chau for investigation based on the investigation results from mainland Chinese authorities and subsequently arrested him.
Earlier, the People's Procuratorate of Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China, approved an arrest warrant for Chau on the 26th on charges of creating a gambling solicitation network in mainland China to facilitate offshore and online gambling for Chinese nationals.
The prosecution stated that about 80,000 members in China participated in the illegal gambling arranged by Chau, and the scale of the involved gambling funds was enormous, seriously disrupting social order. Additionally, Wenzhou public security authorities reported that Chau was also suspected of establishing an asset management company in mainland China to assist "gambling customers" with overseas remittances.
