[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyungsoo] More than half of the approximately 2.8 trillion KRW in comprehensive real estate tax (종부세) levied on housing in Seoul this year was concentrated in the 'Gangnam 3 districts' of Gangnam, Seocho, and Songpa-gu.
According to data titled '2021 Comprehensive Real Estate Tax Housing Division Seoul District Notification Status' received by Rep. Chu Kyung-ho of the People Power Party, a member of the National Assembly's Planning and Finance Committee, from the National Tax Service on the 26th, the 종부세 amount in the Gangnam 3 districts was 1.4681 trillion KRW, accounting for 52.9% of the total in Seoul.
The number of people notified in the Gangnam 3 districts was 226,000, which was 47.1% of the total 480,000 across all 25 districts of Seoul. The number of people notified in the Gangnam 3 districts increased by 9.7% from 206,000 last year, and the tax amount increased by 110.3% from 698.2 billion KRW during the same period.
By district, Gangnam-gu was levied on 92,000 people with 838.3 billion KRW. Seocho-gu had 65,000 people with 395 billion KRW, and Songpa-gu had 69,000 people with 234.8 billion KRW levied.
The proportion of the Gangnam 3 districts among the total number of people notified for 종부세 in Seoul decreased from 52.4% last year to 47.1% in 2021. The tax amount proportion also decreased from 58.8% to 52.9%, while the proportion of the remaining 22 districts increased.
Outside the Gangnam 3 districts, Yongsan-gu had a large number of people notified and tax amount, with 21,000 people and 191.3 billion KRW levied. All 25 autonomous districts saw increases in both the number of people notified and tax amounts compared to last year, with the increase in tax amounts being larger than that of the number of people.
The district with the largest increase in the number of people notified was Nowon-gu, which rose from 6,000 last year to 10,000 this year. The district with the largest increase in tax amount was Geumcheon-gu, which increased from 2.8 billion KRW last year to 19.1 billion KRW this year, a 582.1% increase. The tax amount increased 6.8 times.
