Monthly Energy Usage at Our Home Available... Visualized Data Showing Year-on-Year Changes
Monthly Energy Data by District, Administrative Dong, and Building Type in Our Neighborhood... Greenhouse Gas Emissions Check
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul Metropolitan Government has established the ‘Seoul Energy Information Platform,’ which allows users to view various energy data at a glance, including energy consumption in their neighborhood as well as the energy usage and patterns of individual households. The service will begin on the 29th.
According to Seoul on the 28th, by signing up for the ‘Energy Information Platform,’ users can check whether their household’s monthly electricity, gas, water, and heating consumption has increased or decreased. The platform provides visualized data analyzing monthly usage, usage compared to the same month last year, and the amount of increase or decrease compared to the previous year, making it easy to understand consumption trends. Users can also check monthly energy data and greenhouse gas emissions by district, administrative neighborhood, and building type.
This is the first time that energy data, which had been scattered across various energy suppliers (Korea Electric Power Corporation, Korea Gas Corporation, Korea District Heating Corporation, and Waterworks Headquarters), has been integrated and provided on a single platform by Seoul Metropolitan Government.
With energy use accounting for 91% of greenhouse gas emissions in Seoul, the city aims to provide a platform that integrates and analyzes energy data, enabling citizens, companies, and public institutions to compare and analyze their energy consumption independently. This will encourage rational energy use, energy savings, and greenhouse gas reduction.
The ‘Energy Information Platform’ also functions as a community space for participants in Seoul’s ongoing energy citizen participation projects. The ‘Energy Self-Reliant Village Project,’ which encourages citizens to practice energy saving and efficiency at the village level in response to the climate crisis, has systematized the entire process from application to performance registration through the platform. The ‘Seoul-type Energy Innovation District’ for greenhouse gas reduction has prepared dashboards that allow users to view energy consumption by each district at a glance.
Seoul has installed large touchscreens (98 inches) displaying the ‘Energy Information Platform’ in the Climate Energy Information Center and the lobby of Seodaemun District Office, enabling the public to check energy consumption across Seoul. The screens will also be installed at the Seoul Energy Dream Center, where they will be linked with citizen education programs to enhance understanding of energy data.
Meanwhile, to commemorate the opening of the ‘Seoul Energy Information Platform,’ Seoul is holding a hackathon competition open to youth nationwide. The competition aims to discover ideas for energy saving and efficiency based on the platform’s energy data. Ten participating teams (28 members) have been recruited, and team-based program development has been underway since the orientation on the 13th. At the final presentation on December 11, the top five teams with high evaluations will receive the Seoul Mayor’s Award and a total prize of 5 million KRW.
Yoo Yeon-sik, Head of Seoul’s Climate and Environment Headquarters, said, “I hope the ‘Seoul Energy Information Platform,’ the first of its kind nationwide, will serve as an opportunity to highlight the importance of data utilization in reducing greenhouse gases and realizing a smart green city.” He added, “We will save energy and reduce greenhouse gases using energy data accessible to everyone, and work toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.”
