[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] China strongly opposed the Democracy Summit to be held virtually by the United States next month, calling it a "pro-China faction creation."

According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs website on the 25th, Wang Yi, State Councilor and Foreign Minister in charge of diplomacy, criticized the Democracy Summit as "essentially waving the flag of democracy to incite global division" during a virtual meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian the day before.

He added, "It is drawing lines based on ideology to incite bloc confrontation and attempting to remodel other sovereign countries in the American style," raising his voice by saying, "This is due to the United States' own strategic needs."

Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian also supported this, stating, "We firmly oppose unilateralism, hegemonic acts, double standards, and interference in China's sovereignty and internal affairs."

He further said, "Iran condemns the politicization of sports events and believes that the Beijing Winter Olympics will be successful," defending China's position against the diplomatic boycott movement of the Beijing Olympics by the United States and other Western countries.

The state-run Global Times, representing the Chinese government's stance, claimed on the same day, "The Joe Biden administration is turning the so-called Democracy Summit into a small ideological group to contain China."

China also expressed caution about the United States and Taiwan joining hands. Earlier, Zhao Lijian, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, warned about the United States including Taiwan in the list of invited countries, saying, "Do not provide any platform to Taiwan independence forces and do not incite Taiwan independence forces," and warned, "Playing with fire together with Taiwan independence forces will ultimately lead to being burned by the fire one started."
