The First Domestic Life Science Company
[Asia Economy Reporter Seo So-jeong] Samsung Biologics has become the first life sciences service company in Korea to be included in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World).
According to the company on the 25th, Samsung Biologics was included in the DJSI World for the first time on the 13th, receiving recognition overseas for its efforts in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management. The DJSI World, which began its evaluation in 1999, is an index that comprehensively considers not only economic performance but also achievements in the ESG sector. Only about the top 10% of ESG management levels among the top 2,500 companies by market capitalization worldwide are included, so inclusion in the index signifies recognition as a global leader in ESG management.
The DJSI consists of three indices: the DJSI World Index, the DJSI Asia Pacific Index evaluating the top 600 companies in the Asia-Oceania region, and the DJSI Korea Index evaluating the top 200 companies domestically. Samsung Biologics was included in all three indices in this evaluation.
On the 1st of this month, Samsung Biologics became the first biopharmaceutical company to receive an A grade or higher in all categories in the ‘2021 Listed Companies ESG Evaluation’ by the Korea Corporate Governance Service (KCGS). KCGS’s ESG evaluation is a leading domestic ESG assessment index that evaluates the sustainability of companies based on environmental management, social responsibility management, and governance for 765 listed companies in Korea. In this year’s evaluation, Samsung Biologics received an A+ in social responsibility management and A grades in environmental management and governance, achieving an improved integrated A grade compared to last year’s B+ grade.
John Rim, CEO of Samsung Biologics who took office in December last year, thoroughly prepared through experts and external consulting, and in June this year published a sustainability management report detailing the company’s ESG management, officially launching ESG management. Samsung Biologics’ first sustainability report contains the efforts made over the past 10 years to strengthen ESG management and plans for future actions.
