Samsung's 'Foldable Laptop' Coming Soon?

[Asia Economy Reporter Seol Gina Jo] This time, it is a laptop with a foldable display. Samsung Electronics, which declared the popularization of foldable smartphones, is expected to unveil its first foldable laptop, the 'Galaxy Book Fold,' sometime next year.

IT specialized media SamMobile reported on the 24th (local time), citing industry sources, that Samsung Electronics may release its first foldable laptop under the name 'Galaxy Book Fold 17' next year.

The media stated, "Samsung's plan targeting the foldable market will expand beyond mobile devices in 2022 to include laptops and others," adding, "While laptops are basically foldable devices, in the future, they will be made with a single display that can fold both top and bottom."

The expected announcement time is early 2022. However, the timing may be adjusted depending on the production capacity of foldable displays.

This is not unrelated to Samsung Display's recent emphasis on the competitiveness of its OLED and the launch of a dedicated OLED website. Through the OLED-dedicated website, Samsung Display classified flexible OLED displays separately from general OLED displays as 'Flex OLED.' The subcategory 'Flex Note' includes laptops that adopt flexible OLED displays on both the top and bottom of the product.

This can be seen as a kind of declaration to expand the application of flexible OLED displays not only to smartphones such as rollable and slidable types but also to other product groups in the future. Samsung Display has also recently shown aggressive moves in the laptop OLED market.

In addition to laptops, Samsung Electronics' slidable smartphone, which the market has been anticipating, is also expected to be unveiled sometime next year. SamMobile said, "It confirms Samsung's efforts to find new form factors," and predicted, "Samsung is leading the foldable display sector and will continue to do so next year."
